Specialist tree surgery services across London
Tree felling & removals
When a tree has reached the end of its safe life — dead, diseased, dangerously leaning, hollow at the base, or simply too large for the space it sits in — felling is often the only responsible option left. Our NPTC-qualified climbers handle every removal in line with BS3998, the British Standard for tree work, and we carry £10 million public liability cover on every single job. In open ground we can straight-fell where it's safe to do so, dropping the tree in a controlled direction with rope guides and wedges. In tight London gardens — terraces, courtyards, conservatories below, fences inches away — we section-dismantle from the top down, lowering each piece on rigging lines so nothing touches the lawn, the greenhouse, or the neighbour's shed. Trunks are processed on-site with our chipper; logs can be left stacked for firewood if you'd like, or removed entirely as licensed waste carriers. We sweep, rake and leaf-blow the area before we leave so you'd barely know we'd been there. If the tree carries a TPO or sits in a conservation area we handle the council application for you, including the supporting arboricultural justification — most boroughs around our UB7 base reply within six to eight weeks. Free written quote within hours of you sending photos, fixed price, no surprises on the day.

Crown reduction & reshaping
A well-judged crown reduction can transform an oversized tree from a liability into the best feature of your garden — restoring light to the lawn, reducing wind-loading on the trunk, and pulling overhanging limbs back from roofs, gutters and boundary walls. Done badly, though, reduction work scars trees for life; topping or 'lopping' (cutting straight across major limbs) leaves stub wounds that rot inwards and trigger weak, water-shoot regrowth that has to be cut again every two years. We don't do that. Every cut is made back to a suitable lateral branch at least one-third the diameter of the limb being removed, exactly as BS3998 specifies, so the tree continues to grow naturally with a balanced silhouette. Typical reductions are 1.5 to 3 metres off the height and spread, never more than around 30% of the live canopy in a single visit. We'll discuss the finished shape with you on-site before climbing — sketches, photos of similar previous jobs, and clear flagging tape on the limbs we plan to cut. Brushwood is chipped on-site, larger wood removed, and we leave the tree looking deliberately shaped rather than hacked. Repeat customers across West London, Buckinghamshire, Surrey and Berkshire — fully insured, free quotes, and honest advice if reduction isn't actually what your tree needs.

Crown thinning & dead-wooding
Dense, congested canopies block light, catch wind like a sail in winter storms, and trap damp around the trunk where decay fungi thrive. A proper crown thin selectively removes a percentage of the secondary and tertiary branches throughout the canopy — never the main scaffold limbs — so wind and light pass cleanly through while the overall outline of the tree stays exactly the same. Most mature London trees benefit from a 15 to 25% thin every five to seven years; we'll tell you honestly if yours doesn't need it yet. Dead-wooding is the companion job: climbing through the canopy and removing every dead, dying, diseased or crossing branch over a defined diameter (typically 25mm or 50mm depending on the situation overhead). It dramatically reduces the risk of falling deadwood injuring people, cars or property below, and it's the single most cost-effective piece of tree-safety work you can do on a mature specimen. Both jobs are carried out by NPTC-certified climbers using rope-and-harness access — no spikes on a living tree, ever — and all arisings are chipped on-site or removed as licensed waste. Insurance certificates and method statements supplied for commercial sites and managing agents on request. Based in UB7, covering all London boroughs and the home counties within a 30-mile radius.

Stump grinding & root removal
Once a tree comes down, the stump that's left behind is more than just an eyesore. It's a trip hazard on the lawn, a perfect host for honey fungus and other root-rot pathogens that can spread to nearby healthy trees and shrubs, and an absolute blocker if you're planning a patio, lawn re-lay, raised bed, fence line or extension over the spot. We bring professional petrol and tracked stump grinders that fit through gates as narrow as 75cm, so we can reach back gardens that excavator-based contractors simply can't access. Standard removal grinds the stump and major buttress roots down to 12 inches (300mm) below ground level — deep enough to plant a new lawn straight over the top or pour a path. For new-build foundations, decking footings or full landscaping resets we can grind significantly deeper on request. The hole is backfilled with the resulting wood-chip arisings (free), or topsoil if you prefer (small extra charge), and tamped down level with the surrounding ground. Smaller surface roots radiating out from the stump can be chased and ground out at the same time. One-off price, all waste options included in the quote, and we're fully insured for any underground services we encounter — though we always ask you to mark up any cables, pipes or sprinkler lines you know about beforehand.

Emergency & storm-damage tree work
Storms don't wait for office hours, and neither do we. When a tree comes down across your driveway at 2am, splits a major limb onto a conservatory roof, or leans alarmingly over a public footpath after high winds, you need someone qualified on-site fast — not a quote next Tuesday. Our emergency response team covers UB7 and all London boroughs within a 30-mile radius and we aim to be on-site within 90 minutes for genuine make-safe callouts during normal hours, and within 3 to 4 hours overnight. We arrive with full climbing kit, chainsaws, a chipper, a tracked mini-loader for clearing debris, and the insurance paperwork your home insurer will need to process the claim. The first job is always making the situation safe: removing immediate hazards, propping or rigging anything that's still in the air, and clearing access for emergency vehicles or pedestrians. Once the danger is dealt with, we can either complete the full clean-up there and then, or come back the next working day if light or noise is a problem. We supply timestamped photos, a written incident report and a detailed itemised invoice — everything insurers ask for — and we're happy to liaise directly with your loss adjuster. £10 million public liability, NPTC-qualified climbers on every callout.

TPO & conservation-area applications
Around 1 in 4 mature trees in greater London is protected — either by an individual Tree Preservation Order, a blanket conservation-area designation, or both. Carrying out works on a protected tree without consent is a criminal offence, and the fines can run to £20,000 per tree on summary conviction (unlimited on indictment). Most homeowners don't realise their tree is protected until a neighbour complains or a council tree officer turns up. We've handled hundreds of TPO and Section 211 conservation-area applications across every London borough and the surrounding counties, and we know what individual tree officers want to see in each authority. We carry out the survey, measure and species-identify the tree, take the photographs the council requires, write the arboricultural justification (the bit that actually gets your application approved), prepare the work specification in BS3998 language, and submit the application on your behalf — usually within 48 hours of you instructing us. Most boroughs reply within 6 to 8 weeks; conservation-area notifications are typically cleared within 6 weeks if no objection is raised. If consent is refused or modified, we'll talk you through the appeal process or revise the spec to something that will be approved. Fixed application fee, no win/no fee on the appeal, and we won't quote for the actual tree work until consent is in writing.

Tree surveys, reports & risk assessments
Whether you're a homeowner worried about a leaning oak after a windy week, a managing agent responsible for trees on a residential block, a developer needing a BS5837 survey before submitting planning, or a school or care-home duty-holder meeting your statutory tree-safety obligations, you need a written report from a qualified arboriculturist — not just a verbal opinion from a climber. Our reports are produced by professionally-trained surveyors and follow the formats expected by councils, insurers and the courts. A standard mortgage or homebuyer tree report covers individual specimens flagged in your survey: species, age, condition, defects, target zones, recommended works and timeframes. Full BS5837:2012 surveys for planning applications include tree categorisation (A through U), root protection areas, tree constraints plans and arboricultural impact assessments, supplied as PDF and CAD-compatible files for your architect. Visual Tree Assessments (VTA) for portfolios and managing agents cover whole sites on a tagged, GPS-located basis with annual or biennial re-inspection schedules — exactly what your insurer's risk-management team is looking for. Reports are typically delivered within 5 to 10 working days of the site visit. Fully insured, ARB-affiliated, and based in UB7 with regular survey work across London, Hertfordshire, Buckinghamshire, Surrey, Berkshire and the wider home counties.
